MBBS, M.D. (Psychiatry)

Psychiatrist,Addiction Psychiatrist,Sexologist

39 Years Experience Overall (36 years as specialist)

The year was 1988, a defining moment in Indian healthcare history, as SGPGI Lucknow opened its doors to serve the nation. Among the pioneers was a young and determined psychiatrist, Dr. H.K. Agarwal, attending to one of the institute’s very first patients in a makeshift OPD tent. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey, both for Dr. Agarwal and the field of psychiatry in India.

Soon after, Dr. Agarwal joined a groundbreaking research team at SGPGI as its nodal officer. The team embarked on a critical mission—to study the survivors of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, one of the worst industrial disasters in history. What Dr. Agarwal witnessed was heart-wrenching: an overwhelming need for psychiatric care amidst a dire shortage of professional assistance. Survivors were battling depression, anxiety, and substance abuse on an alarming scale, but India lacked the infrastructure to address these crises effectively..

A Vision to Tackle Addiction and Mental Health

Dr. Agarwal’s findings played a pivotal role in shaping India’s response. Based on the research, ICMR established dedicated centers in Delhi, Lucknow, and Jodhpur to study drug addiction and its psychiatric impacts. The revelations were startling—addiction was spreading rapidly, yet public awareness of its seriousness was shockingly low.

Determined to make a difference, Dr. Agarwal took a leap of faith. With just ₹6,000 in his pocket—barely enough to cover two months’ rent—he rented a modest house in Indira Nagar, Lucknow, and set up the city’s first private psychiatric and de-addiction center in 1990. What the center lacked in resources, it made up for in passion and commitment. Beds, tables, and essential equipment were donated or rented, and the center became a beacon of hope for those in need.

Nirvan Hospital: A Dream Realized Over the next decade, the small center flourished, driven by Dr. Agarwal’s relentless dedication and a deep sense of purpose. By the year 2000, Nirvan Hospital found a new, larger home in Ismailganj on Faizabad Road, offering 50 beds and comprehensive care for patients. It was a momentous achievement—a testament to Dr. Agarwal’s vision and perseverance.

Humble Beginnings, Towering Achievements Born into a modest family in a dusty village near Rampur, Dr. Agarwal’s childhood was a blend of simplicity and resilience. His classroom was often under a tree, with a jute sack for a mat and a wooden tablet for writing. These humble beginnings instilled in him the values of hard work and empathy, which continue to define his illustrious career.

Reflecting on his 34-year journey, Dr. Agarwal says, “It has been full of ups and downs, but the satisfaction of successfully curing a patient remains the most joyous and fulfilling experience.”

A Legacy of Healing Today, Nirvan Hospital stands as a testament to Dr. H.K. Agarwal’s unwavering dedication and a symbol of hope for countless individuals battling mental health challenges. From a rented house with a handful of resources to a state-of-the-art facility, Dr. Agarwal’s story is an inspiration—a reminder that with determination, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
